Katherine Porter is a painter who both explores and defines a territory that is neither purely abstract nor overtly representational. She grounds these forms through the work’s materiality; oil paint and gouache serve as vehicles for her strong gestures. The emotional directness, bold color, and expressive brushwork are key elements of her paintings.

Katherine Porter (born 1941, Cedar Rapids, Iowa) received her BA from Colorado College and honorary doctorates from both Bowdoin College and Colby College. She has had solo exhibitions at David McKee in New York, the Knoedler Gallery in London, the Nina Nielsen Gallery in Boston, and the Andre Emmerich Gallery in New York. Porter has also been included in the Whitney Biennial several times. Her work is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, The Whitney Museum, Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and the Tel Aviv Museum in Jerusalem among many others. Porter is based in New York’s Hudson Valley and shows regularly with Galerie Hubert Winter in Vienna, Austria.
